25-18, 25-21, 25-15

Report by Colleen King

Sunday October 8th the Tendring women's team travelled up to Newcastle to compete against Northumbria. Northumbria took the victory in a 3 set match (25-18, 25-21, 25-15).

The first set opened with the two teams competing neck in neck. After a timeout from the opponent at 15-14,  Northumbria’s toughest server went on a 6 point serving run to gain momentum and steal the set from Tendring 25-18.

The second set started out slow from Tendring again as they went down 10-5. A big kill from Mechell Daniel and a block from Skye Gullatt and Molly Van Essen helped Tendring find their footing. The two teams battled, but Tendring let it slip and Northumbria again won 25-21.

In the third and final set, Tendring’s defence found some steam but they could not find a groove in their offence. Northumbria’s clean play claimed them the match with a score of 25-15.

The overall play by the Tendring women was great for their starting weekend. New additions to the team show promise of helping the already solid cast. Though the team struggled to find consistency in the passing lanes and had to many errors in their offence there were many highlights. Libero Eleni Bitadou led the team with 9 digs. Offensively, Mechell Daniel had the 10 kills and Skye Gullatt dominated the net with 6 blocks.

When asked about the game captain Mechell Daniels said, “I am proud of my team. We started have had our eye on Northumbria throughout preseason. Though we didn’t pull off a win this set, we will have them in the back of our mind until we face them again.”

The team will compete against Birmingham on Sunday the 15 of October at 17:45. It is the opening home match for the Tendring women and expected to generate many fans. Join them at the Essex University Sports Hall to catch all the action!
